Ancient City
The “city of Sassi” is one of the most ancient in the world. The first urban settlements on “Matera Murgia” date back to the Prehistory. The “caves” gave shelter to primitive men, but also to Basilian monks, who sheltered there in the year 1 thousand, and they set up the “rock phenomena” by painting frescos on the rock walls, “digging out churches, with altars and apses, into the calcareous rock”.
Nearby Matera, a prehistoric whale skeleton was found, and 16 km far from there the “Dinosaurs Park” was discoverded. It is full of clear signs of the mark prints of the extinct and ancient animals.

Culture: Matera is included in the short list of the 6 cities candidated for the “European city of Culture, 2019”
Research: since 1980s Matera has been part of a national programme of development and aerospace-oriented research.
ASI (Italian Space Agency) and “ Geodesy Centre” (to measure earth’s crust displacement) are nearby this city.
