This TEDxCalgary event explored the theme of “wilderness” in true TEDxCalgary fashion, it was full of mystery and adventure into the unknown.
The word “wilderness” evoked a sense of dread, wonder, and excitement. We are living in a world full of contradictions. While we are losing the wild natural spaces around us, we are identifying new and unknown wildernesses in space, oceans, science, engineering, architecture, human thinking and the limits of how far we can push ourselves.
True adventurers joined us at the Calgary Zoo on January 25th for an epic exploration of ideas, people, and place. All the participants answered “yes” to the following:
1. They wished that they were born 100 years ago when Ernest Shackleton started work on the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, because they all would have jumped to join such an expedition…
2. The participants were not intimidated to answer this ad: “Men and Women wanted for hazardous journey into the frontier of ideas, during bitter cold month of January 2014. Long hours of constant surprises, safe return back to an average mindset doubtful, no recognition in case of success.”
3. Participants were constantly thinking about the unexplored, still-wild frontiers in their lives, and how to prepare themselves and the communities around them for an increasingly complex future.
This was a sincere exploration of Wilderness in its many human, natural and intellectual forms through the lenses of Technology, Entertainment and Design. We sold out the event very quickly event though we did not release any speaker names prior to the event!
The TEDxCalgary team was delighted to see the looks on the participants faces as they opened the event program for the first time!
The full-day program ran from 9 AM to 6 PM. A full service lunch and 2 refreshment breaks were provided.
