Theme: Ideas In Motion

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Angeliki Giannakopoulos

Angeliki established Artemis Productions and the Greek-American Theater Company of Los Angeles. She went on to produce and direct more than 15 productions including “Ten Stabs for Ten Bullets” at the Beverly Hills Playhouse, “The Marriage” at the Gascon Theater (winner of 7 Drama-Log Awards, including Best Direction), “Illya Darling” at the Skylight Theater and the 24th Street Theater (winner of 3 Drama-Log Awards). Giannakopoulos later served as an Associate Producer for NBCUniversal primetime series “Friends,” “Frasier,” “Will and Grace,” “The West Wing” and “Law and Order.” Her most favorite project of all “My child-Mothers of war” won Director’s Choice at the Cinequest Film Festival 2006 and Best Documentary Award at the La Femme Film Festival. Between 2006 and 2010 more than 250 screenings have occurred around the country in schools, church halls and also it aired on PBS for two years.

Colette Miller

Colette Miller has been painting and traveling the world since finishing VCU Art School in Virginia. Lacking funds, Colette survived by picking olives in Crete, working at a falafel stand in Israel, hitchhiking and sleeping on the side of the road when necessary. Throughout her journey, she continued to pursue her love of painting. The Angel Wings Project began in Los Angeles, the City of Angels, in 2012. It started as a spontaneous act, an expression of hope, a gift to the community, painted on a public wall without permission. Colette’s first set of wings took flight on their own. Passers-by began posing / taking pictures in front the wings and sharing them on social media. Soon thereafter, people from all walks of life captured and shared their very own wings portraits. Colette began receiving requests to create more sets of wings from business owners, non-profit organizations and individuals. Colette’s wings have taken her to Kenya, Australia, Mexico and across the United States.

David Resnick

David Resnick is a technology entrepreneur who creates playful, and community-building experiences. David earned his M.S. in Arts Computation Engineering from UC Irvine where his thesis work on haptic communication was featured in Engadget, Gizmodo, and UCLA Gamelab. He is currently the CEO and co-founder of Bestr, a mobile app to organize and share the best recommendations in your life, and chief and co-founder of Stutter Social, an online community that uses Google Hangouts to host worldwide support groups. Google made press efforts on behalf on the organization (Forbes, LA Times) and promoted Stutter Social on social media and their internal company newsletter. David was previously the co-founder of Evolving Media, a digital agency, with clients including GlaxoSmithKline, Elton John, and Johns Hopkins University. He also co-founded Love Intelligence Group, an entertainment technology company, where he built interactive visual shows for Enrique Iglesias and the Whitney Museum.

Dr. Cheryl Tawede Grills

Dr. Cheryl Tawede Grills is a clinical psychologist with emphasis in Community Psychology. She is Professor of Psychology at Loyola Marymount University, Immediate Past President of The Association of Black Psychologists, and founder and director of Imoyase Community Support Services. Dr. Grills served as the Co-Executive Director of the LA County Blue Ribbon Commission on Child Protection. She continues to serve as a Los Angeles County Commissioner on the Sybil Brand Commission for Institutional Inspections which focuses on conditions within county jails, probation, correctional facilities and group homes for children. She is principal investigator on several social justice projects related to education reform, mentoring African American youth. Dr. Grills consults nationally on issues regarding cultural competence, multiculturalism and Africentric interventions. She has also studied under traditional medical practitioners in Ghana, Nigeria, and Senegal.

Karen Anzoategui

Karen Anzoategui is a writer/performer/artivist/gender queer performer in Los Angeles most known for their solo show Ser! and received its world premiere at The LATC in collaboration with Louie Perez of Los Lobos, Walter Miranda and CAVA to write original music, garnering 5 LA Weekly nominations, including Best Solo Performer, won 2 LA Weekly awards for Original Music and Musical direction. Sean Mayberry

Sean Mayberry is a former diplomat and social marketer who believes in simple and cost-effective interventions which can improve an area that is often overlooked when addressing poverty in the developing world: mental health. Sean implemented successful HIV/AIDS and malaria programs in Africa for years, and saw firsthand the struggles of the mentally ill in these countries. As a result, in 2013, Sean founded StrongMinds, a social enterprise with the mission of improving the mental health of women in Africa. In 2014, their first year of activity, StrongMinds treated more than 500 depressed women using an innovative model of group talk therapy and achieved a 94% success rate in reaching depression-free status for these sufferers. Prior to founding StrongMinds, Sean was the CEO for FXB International, an anti-poverty team active in Africa, and the COO for VisionSpring, which provides eyeglasses to low-income populations.

Tim Leake

For over 20 years, Tim Leake has leveraged creativity to solve business problems – first, as an advertising creative, then as an innovation consultant, and now (as SVP/Growth & Innovation at RPA) doing both. Tim spent seven years at Saatchi & Saatchi NY, as a Creative Director and got his start in the industry at TBWA/Chiat/Day in Los Angeles, as a copywriter working on world-famous efforts like the Energizer Bunny and Taco Bell Chihuahua campaigns. He joined RPA as an innovation and creative consultant, to help brands including Target, General Mills, Ikea and Wal-Mart transform their business and worldview in order to thrive in today’s constantly changing environment. His mission is to help create competitive advantages – for both the agency’s clients, as well as the agency’s employees. He’s been a speaker at SXSW, on applying the rules of improvisation to marketing strategy and featured twice at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.
