Theme: Seeing Things Differently

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

He is the author of three books: True North, Travels in Arctic Europe (2008, 2010), Empire Antarctica, Ice, Silence & Emperor Penguins (2012), & Adventures in Human Being (2015). When not writing, he works in general practice and emergency medicine in Edinburgh.

Jody Greig

Jody is Director of Flummix®, former teacher of computer science in secondary schools in Scotland and a professional, award winning magician. Jody combined his skills and experience within education and magic to develop the innovative Flummix® Learning FX™ System and is author of the eBooks: Computer Science FX and 21st Century FX. During his time as a classroom teacher, Jody started to experiment with ‘self-working’ magic tricks as an educational tool and was overwhelmed by how effective and powerful it was for engaging learners. Using magic as an educational tool captures the imagination of the learners: New ways to introduce topics and a wonderful alternative approach to assessment – by asking learners to perform a magic trick! All courses encourage learners to develop skills in computational thinking, creativity and higher order thinking!

Max Scratchmann

Max is an artist, author, storyteller and poet. His father was a Dundonian jute worker employed in the Indian mills, and Max’s early childhood was spent being repeatedly shuttled between Scotland and the Far East. Finding it difficult to fit in with his peers in this ever-changing landscape he quickly took refuge in books and painting, and began his illustrious career in the arts when he sold his first painting at the tender age of seventeen. Today Max is equally well known for his dark illustrations and lively performance poetry; and he was a big hit at the 2014 Edinburgh Festival with his eccentric and amusing four-star one-man story-telling show, Moving Images, based on forty years of weird cinema. He is also the author of The Last Burrah Sahibs, Scotland for Beginners and Chucking it All, the latter being a UK Kindle number-one-bestseller and one of Worldhum’s best travel books of 2009.

Nicola Goodall

Nicola is a revert Muslim who grew up with hip hop in Edinburgh, and works with women to build community knowledge about birth. Nicola first began to support families around birth 20 years ago, getting deeper and deeper enmeshed through her own childbirth experiences. She moved to Edinburgh in 2004, and was inspired by the Wysewomen Workshops, which aim to bring about the traditional sharing, learning and storytelling amongst women – facilitating workshops where there is no one teacher and all have something to contribute – keeping the flow of love and knowledge moving with creativity. These workshops seek to result in everyone taking home solutions, experience and love. She is also a member of the Pregnancy & Parents Centre, co-facilitates the Edinburgh Home Birth Group and is a member of AIMS, a maternity support and campaign group who have revolutionised childbirth in the UK.

Oonagh O'Brien

Oonagh O’Brien, a lecturer at Queen Margaret University on International Health and Development is an anthropologist currently working on gender, sexual health and prevention of female genital mutilation (FGM). Oonagh’s perspectives have emerged from a long standing interest, experience and commitment to rights, especially the women’s movement and rights of people with HIV both in the UK and internationally. Much of her learning has been through interactions with students from all over the world, whose personal stories and experiences, paint a picture of resilience and innovation in the face of adversity.

Pablo D. Herrera Veitia

Pablo is an internationally renowned hip hop music producer and music event manager from Cuba, who studied at the University of Edinburgh. In 2005, he came to Edinburgh to study a Masters in Sound Design at the University of Edinburgh. At present, he works with musicians and music promoters who are based in Edinburgh, London, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Oslo, Munich, Bogota, Miami, and Havana.

Sarah Drummond

Sarah Drummond is the co-founder and director of Snook, an award winning Service Design agency working globally to create great experiences and empower people to make their ideas a reality. In her spare time she co-founded CycleHack, a company on the mission to reduce barriers to cycling by bringing people together to prototype solutions. Starting with Glasgow, in one year the movement has grown to 40 signed up cities and spawned a viral hack called Penny in Yo' Pants, reaching over 3.2 million cyclists. In her sleep she runs Dearest Scotland, a letter writing campaign that India have copied.
