Theme: Connecting the Dots

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Ana Correia

Sociology student and activist for everyone having a worthy place in the world

Ana Catarina Correia is passionate woman about sports, challenges and enriching new experiences. With a Master on Sociology from the University of Porto, she devotes her time to the challenges of inclusion and promotion of dignity in the lives of people with physical or mental disabilities. She is a Boccia athlete at Sporting Clube de Espinho, and faces competition in a fierce way. She is a member of "Mutações Poéticas, Movimento Estudantil para a Cidadania". She attends the Ubuntu Academy and has Nelson Mandela as a source of inspiration. She likes poetry, believes in the "power of the human mind" and that you can change the world with positiveness. For her, every human being has an immense potential within and deserves "a dignified place in the world".

André Lamas Leite

Coordinator of "One book in prison: A window to fly" and university professor

André Lamas Leite was born in Porto in 1977. With a Master degree on Criminal Sciences and a PhD in Law - University of Porto -, he focuses his research on Criminal Procedure, Penology and Criminology. He is passionate about Arts and Literature, having published three poetry books and written several prefaces. He collaborates with a cultural magazine and has connections with "Pastoral Penitenciária". This connection allowed him to get close to the reality of prisional system in Portugal, where we developed the project "One book in prison: one window to fly".

Catarina Runa

VR and 3D Specialist

Catarina Runa describes herself as creative scientist. She is currently finishing her PhD at PIC – FCUP and IT Porto and focuses her studies in finding inventive ways to solve computer vision and graphics literature problems. As background, she holds a Master degree in biomedical engineering since 2011 and worked in companies, like Siemens S.A. and Microsoft, and was consultant of technology transfer at University of Porto Innovation. More specifically, her pursuit is to deploy on-the-fly facial animation with MoCap systems for Virtual Reality as practical applications dissolving boundaries between academy and industry.

Filipa Frois Almeida

Architect

Flipa Frois de Almeida and Hugo Reis crossed paths somewhere in the Artistic School of Porto, but that was not the place where they met. Only years later, in an architects office in Berlin, Filipa and Hugo met and understood they shared the same passions and visions about this art. There, a a crative team, they decided to apply to a contest of street installations, where they received positive feedback and the certainty of a new path discovered was instantaneous. "Their choice made them return to Portugal and launch the company FAHR 021.3. Working under new perspectives, exploring different working methods and approaches between art and architecture, it is the purpose of their company. The result is provocative and unexpected and comes in different shapes, from street installations, to performances and to intervention.(by Porto Fashion Makers).”

Inês Gonçalves

Bioengineering Scientist and University Professor

Inês Gonçalves was born in 1981 in Porto, where she lived a big part of her life, shi is married and a mother of 3 children. She graduated in Microbiology by the Faculty of Biotechnology of Catholic University in 2003, and obtained a PhD in Biomedic Engineering by the Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto in 2009. Between 2010 and 2013 she focused on her post-doctorate at INEB and IPTIMUP, developing microsphers mucus adehsive as a way to eliminate gastric infections by Helicobacter pylori. As a researcher at INEB she continued to develop research in the area of using biomaterials to prevent gastric cancer. Her work was recognised with 6 awards, within which the "Pulido Valente Science Prize, 2006" and the "L'Oreal Honor Medal for Women in Science", in 2013.

Luís Pinto

World Traveler and Musician

Luis Pinto studies Mechanical Engineering at University of Porto. When he was already half way through university he decided to take one gap year to backpack around the world, leaving home with no money and just his faithful mandolin. Now at age 24 and he is back home after with 14 months of an amazing journey, he is doing a Master and keeps on trusting in the future, conscious that work and positive energy aid the most ambitious of quests. He is always searching for new challenges: lives in the only student fraternity in Porto, Real República dos LyS.O.S, is a gymnast in Sport Club do Porto and is a member of the musical student group Tuna de Engenharia.

Nuno Alçada

Professor and Coordinator of Volunteering for Medical students

Manuel Nuno Alçada is an auxiliary professor in the Medical School of the University of Porto, on the Biochemistry department. He graduated and took his doctorate in the Pharmacy School. He volunteered in the Pediatric wing of the S.João Hospital, in Banco Alimentar Contra a Fome - Porto (organization he also founded) and in the S.António Residential Unit. In 2014 he created and coordinated the curricular unit "Human and Social Formation" for the Medicine Master course.

Paulo Garcia

University Professor and Coordinator of the Learning - Teach Laboratory

Paulo Garcia is an associate teacher in the Physics Engineering Department of the University of Porto. He is subdirector of the Physics Engineering Department and director of the Doctoral Program in Physics Engineering. He develops research activity in astrophysics and instrumentation methods. He teaches Physics in various bachelor and Master courses at the University of Porto, and in this context he developed several activities of pedagogical innovation, such as Keller methods, peer-instruction or the use of e-learning and video. He coordinated a project of pedagogical innovation at "Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian" and is the coordinator of the Teaching - Learning Laboratory (LEA) in the Engineering School of the University of Porto.

Paulo Vasconcelos

Economics Professor and Education Innovator

Paulo Vasconcelos is Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Economics and a researcher at the Maths Research Center of University of Porto. His research focuses on Numerical Analysis, Computational Mathematics and Computational Economics. He also researches topics such as National Defense, Underground Economy and Fraud Systems in Portugal. For a long time he has devoted time to reflect on pedagogical issues, in particular the use of virtual learning environments.

Pedro Mendes

VR and 3D Specialist

Pedro Mendes is a PhD candidate working in the field of Computer Graphics, at Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade do Porto. He is currently dealing with “Automated Facial Rigging System”. He has an M.Sc in Biomedical Engineering by Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa. His final thesis was developed in collaboration with Siemens S.A. and focused on the field of magnetic resonance imaging and computer vision. Pedro is currently part of the Porto Interactive Center group, where he is developing an avatar generation pipeline. Some of the projects he has been involved with include: VERE, GOLEM and LIFEisGAME. With the experience gathered during the last years in computer graphics and facial animation, Pedro aims to work in the field of avatar generation and animation.

Sofia Castro

Economics Professor and Education Innovator

Sofia Castro is Full Professor at Faculty of Economics and a researcher at Maths Research Center of the University of Porto. Besides doing research in Mathematics in the areas of Dynamical Systems and Singularity Theory, she has collaborated with economists in addressing research questions in economics, including problems of general equilibrium, oligopoly theory and New Economic Geography. Throughout her teaching career she has been confronted with several pedagogical challenges that motivate her continuous development in this area.
