Chewang Norphel
A civil engineer by profession, Padma Shri Chewang Norphel has built twelve artificial glaciers in Ladakh to provide water in an area with an acute scarcity of it, for irrigation, ground water recharge and the rejuvenation of the local springs. He was conferred upon with the fourth highest civilian award of India in 2015. Norphel’s largest glacier, at Phutskey village, is capable of catering to a population of seven hundred and had cost just a meagre Rs. 90,000 to make. In a world plagued by the advent of global warming, Chewang’s idea has made a difference.
Gaurav Tekriwal
Founder of the Vedic Maths Forum of India, Gaurav Tekriwal is an advocate and world-wide promoter of the Vedic system of mathematics based on the works of Tirthaji. Gaurav’s idea is to raise the standards of numeracy globally with the help of a system that has a strong fundamental base, and is yet easier and more enjoyble to learn than conventional mathematics owing to its ‘shortcuts’.
