TEDxUniversityofYork is a part of the global TEDx community, welcoming people from every discipline and culture who seek a deeper understanding of the world. Believing passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and, ultimately, the world. TEDxUniversityofYork is organised as an inclusive club open to as many people as possible within in our community-driven events. We will give students of all backgrounds an opportunity to develop and share their own unique perspectives in a non-judgemental, process oriented space while developing friendships and long lasting connections. The TEDxUniversityofYork conference is the keystone of our community and highlight of our year.

The theme of this year's conference is The Manifesto of the Future; looking forwards
through the varied lenses of social, political and hard sciences as well as reflecting on
people's unique individual experiences and perspectives on life to shape how we move forward as a society. The conference will host a range of speakers from around the country, local activist groups and students from the University of York. Together they will explore the future in:

Globalisation and Co-operation, Future Technologies and Overcoming Obstacles.

Adela Iacobov

Third year PPE student at the University of York
Adela is a third year PPE student from Romania passionate about international politics and the role of education in the functioning of democratic societies. She has coordinated summer schools on education and equality in Romanian villages, and has chaired youth political conferences across Europe from Finland to Ukraine. Adela has also interned for the GlobalFocus Centre Romania think-tank to research Romania’s democratisation process for a UNDP project.

Alex Szepietowski

Property tycoon
After interning in every industry he possibly could, Alex realised that, more than any job in the world, he wanted to be his own boss. In 2012, without money or experience and in his 3rd year of PPE at York (Derwent College), Alex read ‘Rich Dad, Poor Dad’ and decided to start investing in property. He spent his student loan on learning how it was done, and 2 years later owned 24 houses and won a few national awards. Alex is incredibly passionate about inspiring others to believe in themselves and forge their own path, irrespective of their circumstances, or what ‘the norm’ dictates!

Andy Miah

Chair in Science Communication & Future Media, in the School of Environment & Life Sciences, University of Salford
Andy is Chair in Science Communication & Future Media, in the School of Environment & Life Sciences, University of Salford, Manchester. He is a leading figure in debates about ethics and emerging technology. Working across disciplines, Prof Miahs's research focuses addresses social, ethical, and legal questions concerning the use of technology, from biotechnology to digital innovation.

Chris Sherwood

CEO of Relate
Chris joined Relate in 2012 as Director of Policy, Communications and Digital Services. Since joining the organisation he has been instrumental in devising the 2015-18 Corporate Strategy, developing our digital services, and growing our influencing and campaigning voice. Chris was appointed as CEO in July 2015. Chris has over ten years’ experience of working in the voluntary sector and prior to this he worked in Westminster and local government. His career interest to date has been on policy, innovation and service improvement in welfare to work, family support and adult social care.

Daljeet Singh

Founder of ppl.travel app
Daljeet (or DJ as he is known as to most) styles himself as an upcoming marketing technologist entrepreneur. He is currently working on an app called “ppl.travel” which seeks to make it easy to ask friends, and friends of friends, for help when travelling. This comes off the back of a company of a similar concept that he co-founded called Friends of Friends Travel. Travel and international community-building are some of his passions alongside writing, arts and crafts, marketing technology and hardcore dancing!

Joanna Frith

Refugee helper at United Rescue Aid
Joanna Lucy Frith is a 28-year- old that has been back and fourth to Calais refugee camp and works for United Rescue Aid, an NGO which helps refugees cross the sea safely. She set up "The Agape Project" that connects people to refugees, helping news and information flow in both directions. Joanna plans to continue this work and encourages organisations to give chances to individuals from all abilities to serve the community through voluntary work.

John Cossham

Green Activist
For three decades John has been making choices which have led to him leading an exceptionally low carbon lifestyle. John's research has led him to believe that if we continue with our current high- consumption lifestyle patterns, we will render the planet uninhabitable, and as a lover of life, this makes John sad. However, although the future is looking bleak, John feels that continuing to be 'Green' is the only appropriate way forward.

Kevin Curran

Award-winning film maker
Kev is an award-winning film maker and campaigner with 15 years experience of social projects. Kev studied film and media at Plymouth University and has a first class degree, his first film Inner Sense won a Royal Television Society Award. He is a creative visionary with a passion and drive to work with the people at the heart of the experience to develop and shape his projects. His hard hitting work has won a series of national awards igniting positive debate around social issues and raising awareness both locally and nationally.

Matthew Rahtz Rahtz

Final-year bachelor's student in Electronic Engineering at the University of York
Matthew is a final-year bachelor's student in Electronic Engineering. Having long been interested in the question of how much influence we have over our own minds, Matthew's experiences throughout university have left him with a fierce conviction that such influence is possible - and that, as in engineering, the key lies in methodology. In his free time he enjoys running, cooking, and embarrassing himself at salsa classes. Following his bachelor's, Matthew hopes to pursue further study in neuroscience and artificial intelligence.

Nathan Hughes

Second year psychology undergraduate at the University of York
Nathan is a second year psychology undergraduate who identifies as transgender, and has been transitioning from female- to-male for the past 4 years. He has a keen interest in LGBT activism and paired with his own experiences, aims to educate and speak out about what it’s like for the trans community here in the UK. Working mostly in his home county of Lancashire he has given advice and presentations on trans issues to police cadets, teachers and provided input for the toolkit given to schools on how to deal with pupils who come out as trans.

Rich Cadden

World Champion
Rich is a World Champion sportsman and a degree-qualified engineer with a positive, pragmatic approach to coaching and personal training, both mental and physical. With a life-times interest in expanding and developing both his physical and mental muscle, Rich has been involved with several industries from railways to aerospace, from car manufacture to health, fitness and well-being. He believes he has now found his true calling in life, helping others achieve their goals. In 2011, he set up Chokdee Academy offering the very best in martial arts and functional fitness in York.

Sam Hiscocks

Co-Founder of Tripwire
Sam is Co-Founder of Tripwire. Sam’s background is heavily marketing based having worked for breweries in Toronto, Johannesburg & Melbourne. Besides alcohol, his real passion lies in travel and integrating into new cultures. Having spent the last 4 years travelling intermittently with two childhood friends, they combined their experiences and technological insight to develop Tripwire, a next generation digital travel community.

Tania Khojasteh

Founder of Über Tutors
Tania is the founder of Über Tutors, a tutoring and mentoring service for students, learners and careerists of all ages and levels. She has taught comparative and regional laws at SOAS, University of London and has worked extensively in the International Development sector. Currently, her passions lie in education and social change.
