With our world becoming increasingly defined by differences and divides, by what’s possible and what’s not, we constantly find ourselves asking: why do boundaries exist? Perhaps it is to limit. To protect. To control. Above all, it becomes more and more important to build bridges instead of walls and celebrate those ideas that unite us.
This year, our theme “Breaking Boundaries” celebrates the limitless. It endeavors to encompass innovative and thought-provoking ideas through talks that go above and beyond the conventional. It aspires to carry us further than we’ve ever been, propelling us toward improvement. Why, you ask? To create. To connect. To grow.
TEDxWarwick 2017 will bring together delegates from across the world to engage in powerful discussions, witness moving presentations from 16 world-renowned speakers and be inspired. Under the TED ethos of ‘Ideas Worth Spreading’, we pinpoint those individuals who have pioneered solutions in a variety of fields including the arts, humanities and sciences. Alberto Vecchio
Alberto Vecchio is a physicist and a Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Birmingham. He was a contributor in Advanced LIGO— a large-scale physics experiment and observatory — which resulted in the groundbreaking discovery of gravitational waves in February 2016.Andrea Crisanti

Having witnessed the oppression of young girls in poverty stricken sub-saharan Africa Ashley embarked on an inspiring journey to empower these women whilst developing sustainable ways to educate them and instigate cultural change within their communities. Through her talk, she aims to remind us that no one is ever too young to instigate change and to encourage us to empower those without a voice. Ashley has given many talks across Kenya and the UK raising awareness to the plight of both marginalised western and sub-Saharan women. At 16 she founded the Hands and Feet Organisation that operates in Northern Kenya, sheltering, training and empowering young girls to stand up and become women that can say no to oppression and escape FGM.Ed Charles

Irem is the co-founder of Project Virtuous Triangle, a platform that matches local university and primary school students to refugee pupils in order to facilitate education, friendship, integration and development. Unlike traditional integration policies that put all the responsibilities on the shoulder of the refugees and immigrants, Project Virtuous Triangle propose a more proactive and interactive model of integration which regards those issues as a chance to solve domestic problems. John Sabraw is an artist, activist and environmentalist; his paintings, drawings and collaborative installations are produced in an eco-conscious manner and he continually works toward a fully sustainable practice. His art is in numerous collections including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Honolulu, Emprise Bank, and Accenture Corp. Dr. Katy Emck OBE is the founder of Fine Cell Work, a social enterprise that trains prisoners in paid, skilled and creative needlework that they can undertake in the long hours spent in their cells; the aim is to foster hope, discipline and self-esteem. She has spent the last 20 years building Fine Cell Work into a social business which sells prisoners’ hand-embroidered products internationally, to museums, interior designers and the public. Her work in prisons began as an actress doing improvised theatre in American and British prisons for the innovative prison theatre troupe Geese Theatre. Katy has also taught in North American universities, worked as a literary journalist and was a Harvard Business School social enterprise scholar.Marguerite Barankitse
Marguerite Barankitse — often hailed as the Angel of Burundi — is a Burundian humanitarian who founded Maison Shalom, an organisation that adopts and cares for tens of thousands of Hutu and Tutsi orphans in the impoverished east African state after narrowly escaping slaughter in the Burundian genocide in 1993. Marguerite has been awarded the $1.1m Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity, the Prize for Conflict Prevention by former Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, and the UNESCO prize, amongst many others.Mark Farid

Sarah is a Senior Campaigner at Survival International, the global movement for tribal peoples’ rights. She has spent almost a decade working with indigenous people, helping them defend their lives, protect their land and determine their own futures. She coordinates Survival’s Uncontacted Tribes campaign and also runs Survival’s groundbreaking Tribal Voice project, which gives tribal people a platform to speak to the world.
