Theme: Democratizing the power of DNA sequencing

This event occurred on
January 21, 2019
San Diego, California
United States

At this event we will watch the video of Karen Gütekunst's talk from our TEDxSanDiegoSalon event at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, with an opportunity to speak with Karen afterwards.

The time has come to democratize DNA sequencing technology by enabling more labs around the world to have access to it, as well as make the technology simpler, faster and more affordable. From screening prior to and during pregnancy, to detecting genetic disease in newborns, to testing for predisposition for disease, to molecular profiling of tumors, we are using DNA sequencing to better understand our individual blueprints and use this information to improve treatment options and quality of life.

Karen Gütekunst, Ph.D. is Vice President of Diagnostic Development at Illumina and leads a team of scientists who are responsible for taking their cutting edge sequencing technology and instrumentation through regulatory approval processes world-wide. She is excited to see next generation sequencing transform the way we think about complex genetic diseases, particularly cancer.
