In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Alexandra Stamatopoulou

Η Αλεξάνδρα Σταματοπούλου είναι αθλήτρια κολύμβησης και το 2011 διεγνώσθη με το σύνδρομο Stiff Person, μια νευροεξελικτική πάθηση που την οδήγησε στο αμαξίδιο. Η ίδια, ωστόσο, είχε διαφορετικά σχέδια για τον εαυτό της. Η θέληση, η επιμονή, η πίστη στον εαυτό της και η αγάπη της για τον αθλητισμό και συγκεκριμένα για την κολύμβηση, την ώθησαν μόλις το 2012 να αρχίσει να λαμβάνει μέρος σε πρωταθλήματα κολύμβησης ΑΜΕΑ κατακτώντας υψηλές θέσεις και πανελλήνια ρεκόρ. Αξιοσημείωτη δε είναι η συμμετοχή της στους Παραολυμπιακούς αγώνες του Ριο το 2016. Ακόμη, η ίδια είναι μέλος της ελληνικής αθλητικής ομοσπονδίας ΑΜΕΑ, συμμετέχοντας σε διεθνείς αγώνες στο εξωτερικό, οπως στο Βερολίνο και το Δουβλίνο, οπού εκεί μάλιστα ανέβηκε και κατηγορία. Στην σκηνή λοιπόν του TEDxAUAthens 2019 θα παρευρεθεί για να μας μιλήσει για το δικό της serendipity και πως η ασθένειά της την εκανε να κυνηγήσει και να κατακτήσει το όνειρό της. Alexandra Stamatopoulou is a swimmer, and in 2011 she was diagnosed with Stiff Person syndrome, a neurological disorder which confined her to a wheelchair. However, this was not enough to hold her back from fulfilling her dreams. Her willpower, her doggedness, the faith in herself and also the love she has for sports, and especially for swimming, are the feelings that drove her to take part in swimming championships for athletes with disabilities since 2012, in which she had very good rankings and had managed to break the Panhellenic record. Moreover Mrs Stamatopoulou took part in the Paralympic games of Rio de Janeiro in 2016. She is a member of the greek federation of disabled athletes, and she has taken part in international championships in various cities, with Dublin and Berlin being amongst them. She will be on TEDxAUAthens’ 2019 stage in order to explain how her disease made her chase and, finally, conquer her dream.

Alexandra Vasilatou

Η Αλεξανδρα Βασιλάτου είναι μια νεαρή σεφ που κατάγεται απο την Κεφαλονιά. Είναι απόφοιτη της γαλλικής μαγειρικής σχολής του Λονδίνου " Le Cordon Bleu" και παρά το νεαρό της ηλικίας της έχει ήδη δουλέψει σε γνωστά (πολλά βραβευμένα με αστέρι Michelin) εστιατόρια του εξωτερικού όπως και το βραβευμένο με αστέρι Michelin " Le Mavrommatis" , στο Παρίσι. Ωστόσο, η ίδια αποφάσισε να τα αφήσει πίσω όλα αυτά και να γυρίσει στην Ελλάδα κάνοντας το επόμενο βήμα. Μαζί με την βοήθεια λοιπόν του μπαμπά της άνοιξε το δικό της εργαστήριο και μαγαζί χειροποίητων ζυμαρικών το " Alex The fresh pasta bar " που συνδυάζει όχι μόνο την αγάπη της για την ελληνική παράδοση και το αυθεντικό ιταλικό ζυμαρικό αλλά και όλες τις παιδικές αναμνήσεις που έχει απο την κουζίνα της γιαγιά της. Στην σκηνή του TEDxAUAthens θα μας μιλήσει για το πως κάποιες serendipity καταστάσεις την οδήγησαν να ξεκινήσει το ταξίδι της με την μαγειρική αλλα και το άνοιγμα του μαγαζιού της. Alexandra Vasilatou is a young chef who has origins from the greek island of Kefalonia. She has graduated from the french culinary school “Le Cordon Bleu” in London, and she has already worked for many well-known restaurants (many of them have received Michelin stars), with the Michelin-Starred restaurant “Le Mavromatis” being amongst them. Despite her achievements in Europe, Alexandra decided to leave it all behind and start a new career back in Greece. With her father’s help, today Alexandra has her own handmade pasta shop named “Alex the fresh pasta bar” which combines her love for authentic italian pasta and greek tradition along with her childhood’s memories from her grandmother’s kitchen. On TEDxAUAthens’ 2019 stage she will share with us some serendipitous situations that drove her to embark on her cooking-journey and also to open her own pasta-shop.

Anna Demirtzi

Η Άννα Δεμιρτζή κατάγεται από την Κωνσταντινούπολη και είναι απόφοιτος του Saint George της Νέας Κηφισιάς. Εργάστηκε για 17 χρόνια και μετά ασχολήθηκε με την ανατροφή των παιδιών της. Το δικό της serendipity ξεκίνησε σχετικά πρόσφατα, το φθινόπωρο το 2018, όταν διαγνώστηκε με καρκίνο του μαστού. Στην συνέχεια, χειρουργήθηκε, υποβλήθηκε σε χημειοθεραπείες και θα συνεχίσει την απαιτούμενη θεραπεία υπό την οποία βρίσκεται αυτή την στιγμή για 10 χρόνια. Αυτό που όμως την ξεχωρίζει είναι πως η ίδια πιστεύει ότι η ζωή συνεχίζεται αλλά και ότι είναι τυχερή που έχει καρκίνο... και όχι κάποια άλλη ασθένεια! Αυτή τη στιγμή ασχολείται με την συγγραφή του δικού της βιβλίου, αλλά και την δημιουργία μιας έκθεσης φωτογραφίας σχετικής με την προσωπική της εμπειρία ενάντια στον καρκίνο. Στην σκηνή του TEDxAUAthens 2019, θα έρθει για να μας μιλήσει για το πως αντιμετώπισε, και ακόμα αντιμετωπίζει την “εισχώρηση” του καρκίνου στο σώμα αλλά και τον εαυτό της. Anna Demirtzi comes from Constantinople and she has graduated from Saint George College of Nea Kifissia. After that, she worked for 17 years but then she mainly focused on raising her children. Her personal serendipity story is rather recent, beginning in October of 2018, with her being diagnosed with breast cancer. Right after that she had surgery, underwent chemotherapy, and is today receiving medical treatment that she will be under for the next ten years. However, what makes her really stand out, is the way she chooses to perceive life, and the fact that she considers herself as being lucky enough to have cancer ... and not any other kind of disease! She is currently writing her own book and working for the creation of a photo exhibition about her personal experience of facing cancer. On the TEDxAUAthens 2019 stage, she will be sharing with us her story, being related to the way she managed and still manages to keep her composure when it comes to her cancer affecting not only her body but her mind as well.

Atomic Love

Οι εγγενείς μελωδίες της Εύας, οι indie και ψυχεδελικές κιθάρες του Πάνου και οι εμπνευσμένες ενορχηστρώσεις του Παύλου στα πλήκτρα συνθέτουν το κράμα των Atomic Love. Βρίσκονται σε ενεργό δράση από το 2017, ενώ τώρα δουλεύουν στον πρώτο τους δίσκο. Το concept της μπάντας βασίζεται στην παράδοση του ελέγχου, που είναι αυτό που μας κινεί να ζήσουμε τον έρωτα και αυτό που μας κάνει να τον χάσουμε, επιζητώντας την ανάκτησή του. Όταν ο έλεγχος επιστρέψει σε εμάς επιστρέφει και η ανάγκη να τον χάσουμε ξανά και ξανά σε μια ατέρμονη λούπα. Οι Atomic Love εξερευνούν αυτό το παράδοξο, την ανάγκη της εξέλιξης και της αυτοκαταστροφής, τις σκέψεις και τα συναισθήματα από το πρίσμα του ενός μέσα σε μια ερωτική σχέση. Eva's inherent melodies, Panos’ indie and psychedelic guitar plays and Paul's inspirational keystrokes are the elements that “Atomic Love” consists of. The band has been active since 2017, and they are now working on their first record. Their concept is based on the giving in of self-control which, according to them, leads someone to find, but also lose love, and then makes them to seek for it once again. When self-control is powerful again on someone, the urge to lose it for one more time comes to mind over and over, so it ends up as an endless loop. “Atomic Love”, as a band, are exploring paradoxes, the need for growth but also self-distraction, and the feelings and thoughts that can come up to a person, while being in a romantic relationship.

Eleni Vardoulaki

Η Δρ Ελένη Βαρδουλάκη είναι μεταδιδακτορική ερευνήτρια στο Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy στην Βόννη της Γερμανίας και ο μαγευτικός χώρος της επιστήμης την κέρδισε από μικρή ηλικία. Σπούδασε Φυσική στο Πανεπιστήμιο Ιωαννίνων, και πήρε το διδακτορικό της στην Αστροφυσική από το Πανεπιστήμιο της Οξφόρδης. Η έρευνα της επικεντρώνεται στη μελέτη ενεργών γαλαξιακών πυρήνων, το πως γεννιούνται και εξελίσσονται οι γαλαξίες και τα αστέρια που τους αποτελούν, καθώς και την αλληλεπίδραση γαλαξιών και περιβάλλοντος, με χρήση δεδομένων από το ευρύ φάσμα της ηλεκτρομαγνητικής ακτινοβολίας, με έμφαση στα ραδιοκύματα, οπτικό και υπέρυθρο. Η αστροφυσική είναι μια από τις μεγάλες της αγάπες και προσπαθεί να τη μεταδώσει σε όλο τον κόσμο όντας πολύ ενεργή στην επικοινωνία της επιστήμης στο ευρύ κοινό, μέσω εκλαϊκευμένων βίντεο στο κανάλι της στο ΥouΤube (Rogue Astrophysics), άρθρων και κουίζ στο Instagram. Στην σκηνή του TEDxAUAthens θα μας μιλήσει για ένα διαφορετικό serendipity… μια από τις πιο σημαντικές ανακαλύψεις στην αστροφυσική. Αυτή η απρόσμενη ανακάλυψη άλλαξε τον τρόπο με τον οποίο βλέπουμε και κατανοούμε το Σύμπαν μας. Μια ανακάλυψη που ήρθε με μια έκρηξη, μια Μεγάλη Έκρηξη! Dr Eleni Vardoulaki is a Postdoctoral researcher for Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy of Bonn in Germany. Since she was a child she found herself being charmed by the enchanting world of Science. She studied Physics at the University of Ioannina in Greece and then she got her PhD in Astrophysics at the University of Oxford. Her research is focused on the study of active galactic nuclei, how the galaxies and their stars are born and evolve, as well as the interaction between galaxies and the environment with the use of data from the electromagnetic spectrum (mostly radio waves, visible light and infrared). Her love and special interest for Astrophysics are evident as Dr Vardoulaki is promoting Science Communication through her YouTube channel (Rogue Astrophysics), articles and her social media. On the stage of TEDxAUAthens she will tell us about one of the most important serendipitous discoveries in astrophysics to date. This unexpected discovery changed the way we viewed and understood our Universe. A discovery that came with a Bang, a Big Bang!

Giorgos Varvarelis

Ο Γεώργιος Βαρβαρέλης είναι ο ιδρυτής και διευθύνων σύμβουλος της Augmenta, η οποία είναι μια νεοφυής επιχείρηση γεωργίας ακριβείας, καθώς και υποψήφιος διδάκτορας του Τμήματος Ηλεκτρολόγων Μηχανικών και Μηχανικών Ηλεκτρονικών Υπολογιστών του Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλίας. Έχει ολοκληρώσει μαθήματα επιχειρηματικότητας στο MIT της Βοστώνης, είναι κάτοχος διπλώματος ευρεσιτεχνίας και απόφοιτος του International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) που διοργανώνει το Υπουργείο Εξωτερικών των ΗΠΑ. Στη σκηνή του TEDxAUAthens 2019 θα μας εξηγήσει πως παρόλο που κάποιες καταστάσεις φαίνονται τυχαίες στην πραγματικότητα δεν είναι, θα προσπαθίσει δηλαδή να καταρρίψει την θεωρία της «Ευσύμπτωσης»! George Varvarelis is the Founder and CEO of Augmenta, a precision agriculture startup as well as a PhD candidate in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Thessaly. He has completed entrepreneurial courses in MIT, Boston, he is a patent holder and an alumni of International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) that is organized by the US Department of State. On the stage of TEDxAUAthens 2019, he will explain how some situations seem to happen by accident, when in reality they are not. He will try to debunk the whole “serendipity theory”!

Konstantinos Berios

Ο Κωνσταντίνος Μπέριος και ο Κωνσταντίνος Σωτηρόπουλος είναι συνονόματοι, φίλοι και συνιδρυτές του Epicloth. Ο πρώτος είναι κάτοχος MSc στην Διοίκηση Κατασκευών από το Columbia University στην Νέα Υόρκη,και ο δεύτερος ολοκληρώνει το MSc του στο Project Management, Finance and Risk από το City University of London. Το Epicloth είναι μια εταιρία που παράγει διάφορα κοψίματα από μετάξι με έναν διαφορετικό και πρωτότυπο τρόπο.Πάνω σε κάθε προιόν δεν αποτυπώνονται απλά τυποποιημένα σχέδια αλλά ένα μοναδικό έργο τέχνης από κάποιον καλλιτέχνη από οποιοδήποτε μέρος του κόσμου.Προσπαθώντας να συνδυάσουν την παράδοση με το μοντέρνο, απώτερος σκοπός των δύο φίλων είναι όχι μόνο να φτάσουν την μόδα σε ένα ανώτερο καλλιτεχνικά επίπεδο αλλά να την καταστήσουν προσιτή σε όλους. Άλλωστε το μοτο τους ειναι "wear a statement".Στην σκηνή λοιπόν του TEDxAUAthens 2019 θα μας μιλήσουν για το δικό τους serendipity, πως από την φιλία τους έφτασαν τελικά στην δημιουργία του Epicloth. Konstantinos Berios and Konstantinos Sotiropoulos are two friends, sharing more than a name! Together they have found their own company, called “Epicloth”. Konstantinos Berios has a MSc in Construction and Engineering Management from the Columbia University (New York, US) and Konstantinos Sotiropoulos is currently finishing his MSc in Project Management, Finance and Risk from the City University of London (London, UK).“Epicloth” is a fashion company which creates innovative cuts of silk, decorated with one-of-a-kind creations from artists from all over the world. Their supreme goal is to make fashion not only artistic, but also affordable, trying to combine traditional and modern habits. Their motto “Wear a statement” is proof to that. On the TEDxAUAthens 2019 stage they will share with us the serendipitous development of their friendship, which led on to the establishment of “Epicloth”.

Ο Βασίλης Μπορομπόκας γεννήθηκε στην Αθήνα και σπούδασε στο Ινστιτούτο Menshund στην Γερμανία. Εδώ και χρόνια ασχολείται με κάτι που αγαπά πολύ, την εκπαίδευση σκύλων. Για πολύ καιρό εκείνος και η γυναίκα του, Σοφία Κατσάτου, ήθελαν να αποκτήσουν ένα σκύλο, όμως λόγω διαφόρων συγκυριών αυτό δεν είχε συμβεί. Ήταν κάπου το 2011 όταν το serendipity μπήκε στην ζωή τους. Η Σοφία διαγνώστηκε μετά την γέννηση του γιου τους με Σακχαρώδη Διαβήτη Τύπου 1. Το αποτέλεσμα αυτού ήταν το 2015 τελικά να υιοθετήσουν αλλά και να εκπαιδεύσουν ένα υπέροχο labrador, την Sugar. Η Sugar σήμερα είναι ο πρώτος Diabetic Alert σκύλος στην Ελλάδα. Με βάση την εκπαίδευση & γνώση της Σοφίας στον διαβήτη, αλλά και την εκπαίδευση της Sugar κατάφεραν την άριστη ρύθμιση. Η μαγική μύτη της Sugar, μαζί με την πειθαρχία της Σοφίας & την δύναμη της σχέσης τους έφεραν τα επιθυμητά αποτελέσματα. Στην σκηνή του TEDxAUAthens 2019 θα μοιραστούν μαζί μας το πως η Sugar μπήκε στην ζωή τους και την άλλαξε με τον πιο όμορφο τρόπο. Vasilis Borobokas was born in Athens and studied at the Menshund Institute in Germany. For years, he has been working on something he really loves and enjoys, training dogs. For a long time Vasilis and his wife, Sophia Katsatou, wanted to have a dog, but considering various circumstances, this couldn’t happen at the time. It was in 2011 when their serendipity story began. Sophia was diagnosed, after the birth of their son, with Type I Diabetes. The result of this was that in 2015 they finally adopted and trained an adorable labrador, named Sugar. Today, Sugar is the first Diabetic Alert Dog in Greece. Based on Sophia's education and knowledge about diabetes, and Sugar’s training, they have achieved an excellent glucose level. Sugar’s magic nose, along with Sophia’s discipline and the power of their relationship brought the desired results. On TEDxAUAthens’ 2019 stage, Vasilis and Sophia will tell us how Sugar came into their life and changed it in the most beautiful way.

Vasilis Tsipas

Ο Βασίλης Τσιπάς κατάγεται από ένα μικρό χωριό της Κορινθίας και η ζωή του ήταν πάντα συνδεδεμένη με την γεωπονία, αφού από μικρός βρισκόταν σε καθημερινή επαφή μαζί της, καθώς η μητέρα του διατηρούσε φυτώριο παραγωγής πολλαπλασιαστικού υλικού ελιάς. Σήμερα, είναι ο Διευθύνων Σύμβουλος και Ιδρυτής της εταιρείας Plantbox. Αντικείμενο αυτής είναι η παραγωγή, τυποποίηση, συσκευασία και η διακίνηση φυτών και δέντρων. Πρώτο προϊόν της είναι, μικρά συσκευασμένα δέντρα ελιάς, δέντρα τα οποία μπορούν να ταξιδέψουν χωρίς να χρειάζονται νερό και ήλιο, μέχρι και για 58 ημέρες! Ο Βασίλης έχει σπουδάσει Γεωπονία στο Αλεξάνδρειο Τεχνολογικό Εκπαιδευτικό Ίδρυμα Θεσσαλονίκης. Στο TEDxAUAthens θα έρθει να μας μιλήσει για το δικό του serendipity, το πως από δύο φαινομενικά ασύνδετες ιστορίες δημιουργήθηκε τελικά το Plantbox. Θα μας εξηγήσει για το πως από μια χάρη που του ζήτησε η γιαγιά του, σήμερα μπορεί να συζητάει για το αν αυτές οι μικρές ελιές θα μπορούσαν να συμμετέχουν σε διαστημικές αποστολές στο μέλλον! Vasilis Tsipas comes from a small village in Corinth, and his life has always been closely linked with agriculture, since he was in daily contact with it, given his mother’s occupation with olive plant reproductive material. Today, he is the CEO and Founder of Plantbox. Plantbox is focused on the production, standardization, packaging and transportation of plants and trees. Its first product is small olive trees, which can travel with no need for water and sun, for up to 58 days! Vasilis has studied Crop Science at the Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki. On the TEDxAUAthens stage, he will share with us his own serendipity, about how from two seemingly disconnected stories emerged Plantbox. He will describe these little trees’ progression, starting from a favour his grandmother asked of him and finally reaching today’s discussions about whether they could possibly participate in space missions in the future!
