As the issue of immigration continues to be front-facing in national politics, this is an opportunity to reflect on the people behind the stories, and the powerful journeys many of them have made to become local residents of Pennsylvania.

The salon will be featuring a talk from Shirin Karsan and screening an official TED talk on the topic. Following our talks will be a facilitated break out session to dive even deeper into the topic.

Shirin Karsan

Shirin Karsan is a refugee from Uganda, an immigrant and citizen in the USA, and has lived in several countries. She graduated with a Master of Bioethics from the University of Pennsylvania. She is a Fulbright Scholar. Her work in the United Arab Emirates focused on cultural and religious perspectives in the ethics of emerging technologies, specifically related to In Vitro Fertilization. She worked at Drexel University Nanotechnology Institute and later in the School of Biomedical Engineering as Director of the “weServe” Program. Her work and research have been published in several books and journals. She serves on various boards including The Welcoming Center for New Pennsylvanians, The Philadelphia Foundation and Global Bioethics Initiative. Shirin’s extensive training and volunteer experiences include teaching bioethics, mediation and conflict resolution, board development and as a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) for children. She is a breast cancer survivor and a pilot.
