We're still forced to be physically distanced by COVID, but that doesn't stop us from being connected around great ideas!

Sharing ideas that matter is actually even more important now than ever, and our ENGAGE: Connected event will give us an opportunity to explore ways we can do that until we get a chance to get back together in larger groups.

Join the TEDxCalgary team for an evening virtual event with LIVE speakers and great opportunities to share your own ideas in our post-talk discussion circles. Dive even deeper with the speakers and other participants as we explore how our concepts of connections have changed over the last several months, and possibly for a long time to come.

Anila Lee Yuen

----- Anila is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for Newcomers, and has 25 years of experience in the settlement sector. During her tenure as CEO, she has spearheaded programming to include volunteer-led refugee supports; indigenous integration for newcomers; LGBTQ+ supports, domestic violence, homeless and mental health support services and broadened vulnerable youth programming and social venture opportunities. An active community volunteer and leader, Anila is the Vice Chair of the Alberta Association of Immigrant Serving Agencies (AAISA), Vice Chair of Ag Media at the Calgary Stampede and President-elect at the Rotary Club Millennium in Calgary. Anila holds a BSc (Hons) in Psychology (Behavioural Neuroscience) and a BSc in Biological Sciences from the University of Calgary and an MBA from Keller Graduate School of Management. She is an alumnus of the US State Department’s International Visitor Leadership Program and is a featured author in the International Museum of Women's anthology Imagining Ourselves: Global Voices from a New Generation of Women and the recipient of the Governor General's Award in Commemoration of the Person’s Case in 2001 for her work advocating for the rights of immigrant and minority women and children in Canada. In 2017 she was honoured with receiving the University of Calgary Alumni Award and Top 40 Under 40 designation. In 2019 she received the Woman of Wonder award and a Women of Inspiration Award.

Dr. Rupinder Toor

----- Dr. Rupinder Toor is a medical doctor who is passionate about women’s health and believes that empowering women through reproductive health is the key to building strong families and communities. She has proven to be a champion, innovator and thought leader in the areas of women’s health, birth control, intrauterine devices (IUDs), and culturally appropriate health care and has successfully redefined women’s health as a primary care speciality. Dr. Toor has received national recognition and awards for her work, including the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal, College of Family Physicians of Canada Award of Excellence, the University Of Calgary Cumming School of Medicine Alumni of Distinction award, and the Legacy Award from the Calgary Board of Education, to name a few. In 2020, Dr Toor and her team is launching Project EmpowHER, a new not-for-profit, that will focus on empowering women, especially vulnerable girls, by improving awareness and access to long acting birth control.

Dr. Ryan Todd

------ Dr. Ryan Todd is a psychiatrist at Foothills Hospital in Calgary, Alberta, where he has seen and treated thousands of individuals who have a mental illness as a result of trauma, medical or surgical illness. Dr. Todd believes mental wellness can be learned and practiced by everyone, and that technology is a vital resource in helping bridge the gap between demand and mental healthcare today. This belief fuelled his desire to start headversity, a mental wellness tech company where he acts as CEO. Through headversity, Dr. Todd envisions building a culture of mental wellness in the Canadian workforce through mobile, micro, and measurable training.

Jan Keck

What else do you do after you've been a world traveller (including working as a carnie and on a cattle station in Australia), ran for city council at age 20, and completed an engineering degree? Move to Canada and start over 75,000 conversations that matter, of course! We first saw glimpses of Jan's skills with deep conversations at TEDFest in 2018, when his Ask Deep Questions cards were being used to spark new ideas and deep conversation across TEDx organizers from around the world. Right then, we knew he was someone we wanted as part of our ENGAGE: with Ideas series, which is all about making new and deeper connections across our participants. Jan is a connection coach based in Toronto, a video creator, and a passionate entrepreneur.

Jonathan Neufeld

----- Jonathan is the CEO of TECTERRA Inc., a non-profit that provides funding and support to companies who develop innovative geospatial technologies. Jon oversees a small and dynamic team that provides their clients with the opportunity to commercialize their products faster than they could have on their own. Jon started his career as a geomatics engineer after finishing his degree at the University of Calgary in 2003. He spent nearly 10 years in highly technical roles with mapping companies before joining TECTERRA. In 2016, Jon was appointed as the CEO of TECTERRA where he employs big picture thinking and a proven ability to translate ideas into action. As a leader he believes in the power of constructive disagreement and fostering an open, positive environment. He is an avid hiker, climber, and cyclist; and is passionate and unwaveringly optimistic about where technology will take us into the future.
