She is known for pioneering the art of Laparoscopy in the late 90s when Laparoscopy was an emerging technology. For her remarkable contribution, in 2015, she was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award, by the Government of India. In 2016, She was recognized by the Guinness World Records for removing the 84 number of uterine fibroids in a single operation. Manjula has also co-founded an NGO named Pratyusha to campaign for women's health.
