In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

André Mendes

Born in Curitiba in 1979. André Mendes is a Brazilian visual artist whose work occupies the borders between painting, large-scale muralism and immersive spatial interventions flirting with architecture. André has gargantuan murals around the world and carries under his belt many national and international exhibitions. He is also an art educator and creates workshops for schools, kids hospitals and the all-ages public to encourage them to do artistic exercises and interact with each other through those experiences.

Andrew Kassoy

Andrew Kassoy, Co-Founder and CEO of B Lab Global. With his partners, Andrew received the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship and was featured as a New York Times Visionary. He is a Board Member of Echoing Green, was a member of the U.S. working group of the G8 Social Impact Task Force, and on the Forbes Impact 30 list of leading social entrepreneurs. Andrew was raised in Boulder, Colorado and graduated with Distinction from Stanford University where he was a Truman Scholar and President’s Award winner.

Bicheng Han

Founder and CEO of BrainCo (a brain-computer interface (BCI) company) and BrainRobotics (BCI-based prosthetic company). PhD candidate at Harvard Center of Brain Science. BrainCo and BrainRobotics ranked top 10 BCI companies selected by the US media. Bicheng applied the BCI technology to help children with ADHD and autism to get early intervention and restore social functions. He also invented the world’s first mass-produced mind-controlled prosthetic for the disabled, which allows people to control delicate finger movements. This prosthetic was named one of the best products of 2019 by Time Magazine. In 2017, Bicheng was selected as China’s “35 Top Scientists Under 35” by MIT, a century-old science and technology magazine.

Mr Sezto Man Chung has been focusing on the development of the new retail economy and endowing the commercial real estate space with brand-new values by combining creative commerce and cultural art space. He has been deeply engaged in the field of comprehensive commercial real estate for more than 20 years and has become the new iconic figure in this area. Mr Sezto has created an innovative business model called CURETAIL (Curated Retail). Dwaine Perry

Dwaine Perry, Dwaine Perry is no stranger to the front line. From helping to integrate the first barbershop in Suffern in 1965 to serving in the Army as a member of a six-man reconnaissance team, he’s s a man out front, particularly regarding human rights. Upon returning to the US after Vietnam, he enrolled at Rockland Community College, where he was instrumental in establishing the College’s first student organisation for people of color. He established an indigenous-rights group that was the precursor to the reformation of the Ramapough Lunaape Nation’s modern restructuring and has sat with Elders and indigenous leaders in the Himalayas, The Andes and throughout North America seeking and coalescing the seeds of unity and truth. Today, he focuses on issues concerning the Ramapough Lunaape Nation and the Indigenous community. He established the Split Rock Sweetwater Prayer Camp and he is currently working to establish the first Embassy of Sovereign Indigenous Nations of the Western Hemisphere. The Chief has called for those whose screams have been made silent through the normalisation of repression.

Frances Li

Frances Li is an expert in charitable foundations and arts management, a cultural management and art museum business visionary, and investor in the tech and cultural industry sectors. She has been dedicated to social welfare, serving from 2010 to 2014 as the Executive President of SmileAngel Foundation, during which time she presided over the preparations for the SmileAngel Children’s Hospital, and won the “China Charity Award” – the highest honour given by the Ministry of Civil Affairs in the field of China’s charity foundations. In 2014, she was invited to serve as the Executive Chairman of Yuan Art Museum Preparation Committee, a private art museum with educational responsibilities to the public; this art museum was founded by Zeng Fanzhi and designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando. Based on her outstanding social contributions, she was awarded the “Red Flag March 8 badge” in Beijing in 2018; she became the Global Chief Operating Officer of I.M. Pei Foundation (贝聿铭基金会) the following year, and initiated the creation of the Asian Architectural Heritage Foundation. She is committed to art asset management, endeavouring to create a mutually beneficial system of private art collection and national cultural heritage protection. In 2016, Li founded alittlepoetess Research / Production / Artkeeper , the aim of which is to develop the relationship between private art collections and the cultural heritage protection system, developing linked ways of thinking, and effective modes of support and influence, in order to mutually support the country’s future cultural development. Today’s China needs to gradually accumulate and protect its wealth of contemporary cultural heritage, in order to lay realistic and sustainable foundations for national cultural assets and thereby self- confidence. The alittlepoetess team has been working with Hongyuan Group, one of the largest logistics companies in China, to establish and design a new kind of art care system linking all art service sectors on one platform – a “one-stop” service system within the bonded area of Beijing Capital Airport. Li is also heavily involved with innovation for arts and technology education. She created the brand ArtTechKids (ATK) in 2018 to study the current state of parent-child education in China and Japan. ATK is a family-focused deep learning centre that combines art, technology, educational space, amusement park, and creative training curricula. With strategic forward-thinking, Frances Li is always trying to break boundaries. She has become one of the primary leaders in the industries she is involved with. With the original intention of cultural heritage protection, Li upholds sustainable development strategies and innovation in entertainment, and is now engaged in urban renewal and international community development.

Gunter Pauli

Gunter Pauli is a world-famous economist and ecological activist, the founder of “blue economy” model, and a member of Rome club, a world-famous think tank. He’s the publisher of the European Edition of the state of the world report, the flagship publication of Worldwatch Institute. His activities cover business, culture, science, politics and environmental protection. He proposed an innovative “blue economy” model, promoted the solution of environmental problems in a way of no waste, zero pollution and low cost, and established the first ecological factory in Europe. He not only pays attention to economic and ecological issues, but also to introducing the concept of environmental protection into children’s reading. Gunter Pauli has compiled a set of “Gunter ecological children’s book”, which can be described as children’s version of “blue economy”, hoping to cultivate children’s environmental awareness from an early age.

He has multiple hobbies ranging from math, music, languages, reading, sports, to games, particularly Minecraft. Harry speaks fluent Chinese and English, likes to debate with his friends and family members, and even discussed his impression of Barcelona with a group of local high school students in a small town in Spain.

Helen Hai

United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) Goodwill Ambassador, Head of Binance Blockchain Charity Foundation and Dean of Binance Blockchain Institute. Ambassador Hai was trained as an actuary in the U.K. with near 25 years of international experience in FTSE100 companies. She holds a Bachelor of Actuarial Science and a Master of Science in Actuarial Management from CASS Business School in London, as well as EMBA degrees from INSEAD and Tsinghua University. She received executive leadership education at both Harvard University and UC Berkeley. She was the Founder of the Made in Africa Initiative which advises African Head of States for industrialisation and investment promotion. Ambassador Hai was named as Young Global Leader by World Economic Forum in 2015, and she is the co-chairman of the Global Future Council on World Economic Forum. Hongjun Hu

“Street dance is real and natural. It represents the original urban ecology and possesses universal empathy.” — EVO Street dance entered China in 1987. After 1998, the second generation of cultural pioneers represented by EVO Hu Hongjun visited various countries in the last twenty years, learned profoundly about the cultural context, commonalities and differences of street dance culture in numerous regions. He has been dedicated to introducing theories and techniques, cultivating the next generations of street dance talents for China, and actively promoting the coexistence and complementarity between culture and commerce, entertainment, and politics as a dancer and cultural promoter. So far, street dance has become a cultural icon in China breaking the barriers of age, gender, ethnicity, and belief, spreading its branches and leaves, and rooting in the hearts of the people. EVO is art director and co-founder of CASTER dance studio, a Chinese hip hop culture promoter, and the head and honorary consultant of China Street Dance Art Committee. He was the first runner-up in the variety show “Xiaoao Jianghu” broadcasting at Dragon Television. He has been invited to visit Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea and other regions to give lectures, and has been the referee of Street Dance Festival and other famous international competitions in South Korea. James Lee

James debuted as a bassist in KPOP group Royal Pirates in 2011. In 2015, a tragic accident happened which nearly led to amputation of his left hand, and rendered him unable to play the bass any longer. After 5 surgeries, James moved back to Los Angeles and decided to release the music written post accident in an album called “The Light EP”. Topping the charts internationally, ‘The Light EP’ hits top 10 in several countries as well as #1 in the Philippines and #2 in Singapore on iTunes. He currently writes, produces and works as Music Director for Artists in Asia.

Jasmine Chen

Jasmine Chen is a jazz singer and songwriter, based in Shanghai, China. Born into a family of professional folk dancers and actors, Jasmine Chen was groomed to be a concert pianist but fell in love with jazz while studying at the prestigious Leeds College of Music in England. She returned to China in 2005 to follow this passion, bringing China’s rich musical heritage into the world of jazz. Jasmine Chen has since become one of China’s leading figures in the jazz scene, combining Western songs with original Chinese lyrics. She appeared in the 2018 smash hit Crazy Rich Asians movie, directed by Jon M. Chu, as herself. Six of her songs appear in the movie, and three are featured on the movie’s soundtrack. In addition to her film work, Chen is an ambassador for jazz music and culture. She has given talks for TEDx, and frequently speaks about jazz, music and the cultural context for any number of audiences, from corporations to universities and arts organisations. Jason Botkin

Jason Botkin is deeply committed to the transformative power of public art, using unconventional tools offered with the belief that art should challenge the assumptions of everyday life and its institutions. Environmental activism and active reconciliation inform much of his social practice, which includes the co-creation and ongoing direction of the EN MASSE project; a multi-artist, collaborative drawing project that explores the power of shared creativity and building community through the creation of highly spontaneous, large-scale collaborative black and white drawings and public installations.

Jeffrey Tung

Jeffrey is a singer, actor, and fashion entrepreneur. His representative musical works include “Fly to Paris” ,“Understand”, etc. His gentle and healing songs perfectly show the resonance of self and soul, which is also known as “Tung Style Love Song”. While catching the public with his love songs, he continues to unlock new identities and seeks new breakthroughs in acting. Jiawei Lu

Lu Jiawei is a performer of Shanghai x troupe, a national second-class actor. Born in October 1981, he joined the Shanghai Pingtan troupe in 2002 and learned from famous Tanci writers Zhang Zhenhua and Zhuang Fengzhu. His representative works include long Tanci “Shentanzi”, “Miao Jinfeng” and “Meng Lijun”; medium Tanci “four beauties”, “Lin Huiyin” and “Xu Beihong”. He was awarded the title of advanced artist of Shanghai Publicity Department of Municipal Committee in 2013. 陆嘉玮，上海评弹团演员，国家二级演员。1981年10月出生 ，2002年进入上海评弹团，师承弹词名家张振华、庄 凤珠。代表作品有长篇弹词《神弹子》、《描金凤》、《孟丽 君》;中篇弹词《四大美人》、《林徽因》、《徐悲鸿》等。曾获 2013年上海市委宣传部先进文艺工作者 。

Juan van Wassenhove

Juan van Wassenhove, Belgian, has been living in Hong Kong and Mainland China for over 20 years. He was a banker with JPMorgan Chace & Co. for many years but has always been passionate about art and architecture. Years later, love for his new home, its cultural heritage and beauty landed him in Beijing, and is widely known as co-founder of The Temple Dongjingyuan, a special landmark in the heart of the Chinese capital. They took a special interest in renovating a temple called “Zhizhusi” or “Temple of Wisdom” in the late 2008s. The main objective of the restoration of the 600 years old building and site was minimal alteration, ample reuse of its original materials, maximum retention of its heritage. The property now stands historical, living, and more than ever, closer to what it once was. In 2012, the restoration of Zhizhu temple received the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation and it is considered one of the best examples of heritage conservation in Asia. Moreover, it has now been classified as a national historical building in 2019. Temple Dongjingyuan connects the old with the contemporary and is the recipient of permanent installation by James Turrell (Gathered Sky), teamLab (Enso) and many others. In 2019, Temple Dongjingyuan had over 120,000 visitors.

Julie Taymor

Julie Taymor is a Theatre director based in New York City, a recipient of the MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, as well as an inductee into the “Theater Hall of Fame”. Her Broadway adaptation of The Lion King debuted in 1997 and received 11 Tony Award nominations, receiving awards for Best Director and Costume Designer. The show has played over 100 cities in 20 countries on every continent except Antarctica, and its worldwide gross exceeds that of any entertainment title in box office history. Steve Leonard is an international leader in the information technology industry with more than 25 years of experience building hardware, software, and managed-services companies in Asia and Europe. Leonard also has broad experience in government, holding senior roles in Singapore through which he created and implemented national programs for an innovation-based economy. Leonard currently serves as CEO of Singularity University (SU) — a Silicon Valley based global organisation that enables leaders to understand how future technologies will impact their companies and countries, and engages those leaders to help them shape that future. Wing Shya

Born in Hong Kong in 1964, Wing Shya founded Shya-la-la Workshop after graduating from Emily Carr Institute. He ventured into Still Photography when working for the renowned director Wong Kar-Wai in 1997 for his acclaimed movies Happy Together, In the Mood for Love, 2046, and Eros. Award-winning graphic designer and typographer, Shya has evolved into an accomplished movie director when his first feature film Hot Summer Days was released in 2010, and continued on with the sequel Love in Space in 2011. Shya’s most recent film Stay Away from Me is expected for a duly release in 2021. He made his return to fine art in March 2006 at Mori Art Museum in Roppongi, Tokyo, with his inaugural show, Distraction/ Attraction. In 2007, he was selected to exhibit in In Fashion 07 at Art Basel Miami. In 2017, he showcased a retrospective show at SCoP Shanghai, which also travelled to Xie Zilong Photography Museum in Changsha. In 2020, during the pandemic, Shya exhibited in the 7th edition of Kyotographie, where he hosted multiple online seminars and workshops, cultivating the pedagogical seeds in art and photography.

Winy Maas
