In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Brenda Hopkins Miranda

Brenda Hopkins Miranda is a Puerto Rican eclectic jazz pianist, creative composer, fearless improviser and educator. As an artist she mixes rhythms and all sorts of multicultural influences together with the intensity of a mad scientist and comes up with something quite unlike any other ethnic jazz mixture out there. Brenda has performed all over the Caribbean, North, Central and South America and Spain. She has recorded 7 critically acclaimed albums and has also created music for several award-winning movies, short-films and documentaries. Brenda graduated from the Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico with a Magna cum Laude Classical Piano Bachelor degree. She graduated from New England Conservatory with a Contemporary Improvisation Master’s degree. Hopkins Miranda also completed Musicology Doctoral Studies at the Universidad de Granada, Spain. Hopkins Miranda is a full-time Music Program faculty member at the Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico Recinto Metropolitano. As an educator Brenda is passionate about developing creativity, originality and innovation in her students. The Interamerican Organization for Higher Education recognized her innovative didactic methodology by awarding her with the Gilles Boulet 2014 first prize medal. She also served for several years as Director of the Puerto Rican Institute of Culture Music Program.

Dr. Jasmine Marcelin

Assistant Professor of Medicine/Infectious Diseases and Associate Medical Director of Antimicrobial Stewardship at University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC)
Dr. Jasmine R. Marcelin is an Assistant Professor of Infectious Diseases, Co-Director of Digital Innovation & Social Media Strategy for the Division of Infectious Diseases, Associate Medical Director of Antimicrobial Stewardship & Associate Program Director of the University of Nebraska Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency. Born in Dominica, she earned her medical degree from American University of Antigua College of Medicine & completed Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases training at Mayo Clinic. A fierce advocate for health equity and justice for patients and the community, and a champion for justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in healthcare and Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), and youngest member ever elected to the IDSA Board of Directors. A founding member of the IDSA Inclusion, Diversity, Access & Equity Taskforce, playing a pivotal role in developing and maintaining principles of Inclusion, Diversity, Access & Equity in IDSA.

Dr. Pat Friman

Vice President of Behavioral Health at Boys Town and a Clinical Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Nebraska School of Medicine.
Dr. Patrick C. Friman is Vice President of Behavioral Health at Boys Town and a Clinical Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, University of Nebraska School of Medicine. Former positions include Johns Hopkins University, Editor of the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, President of the Association for Behavior Analysis International. A published author of over 200 scientific articles, chapters and three books, focusing primarily on scientific and clinical work is in Behavioral Pediatrics and Behavioral Medicine. Dr. Friman’s work in behavioral pediatrics has concentrated on the gap between primary medical care for children on one side, and referral-based clinical child psychological and psychiatric care, on the other. A secondary focus is on adolescent behavior and development. He also specializes in consultation regarding workplace issues such as motivation, dealing with difficult people, change, happiness and pathways to success.

Dr. Roger Firestien

University Professor, Business Consultant
Dr. Roger Firestien is an associate professor and senior faculty member at the Center for Applied Imagination at SUNY Buffalo State and President of Innovation Resources, Inc. He has spent over 30 years teaching creativity and the creative process. By applying Roger’s work in creativity: Clorox solved a 77-year-old problem in 15 minutes; General Motors came up with a $1.50 solution that saved the company $50,000 a week; Western New York developed strategies that were incorporated into a plan that was awarded One Billion dollars for economic development. Called “The Gold Standard” of creativity training by his clients, he has presented programs in creativity to over 600 organizations nationally and internationally. The author of six books, including Leading on the Creative Edge and Why didn’t I think of that? His expert views on creativity have been reported in Fast Company, Forbes, Investor’s Business Daily and The New York Times.
