Founder of Kuwait Commute
Jassim Al-Awadhi is the founder of Kuwait Commute, an initiative with the mission of bringing awareness to Kuwait's public transportation system & traffic situation. Kuwait Commute was founded in July 2018 in collaboration with students from the College of Architecture and volunteers. We wanted to do something different in Kuwait which is start a grassroots movement as that was what we saw missing and through presentations, interviews, and actually using the bus we educated the public with the importance of public transportation and the current status of it with the goal of having a public transportation system that is 1-Safe 2-Convenient 3-Eco Friendly 4-Inclusive.
Kyle Balasingam
Student, Space enthusiast
Kyle Balasingam was born on September 22, 2003, in Miri, Malaysia. He is a student, member of the honour society and maths honour society. He has been a member of the Kuwait Experiment to Space team since March 2020.
Mahlak Abdullah
Student, Environmental Activist
Mahlak Abdullah is a first year student studying Human Biology at the University of California, San Diego. She is a member of the team working on Kuwait’s Experiment in Space. She is taking the lead in designing and refining lab procedures and NASA documents, analyzing data, obtaining vital materials, and spreading awareness all throughout the local community.
Environmental Activist, Founder Refood
Maryam is the founder of Refood, a non-profit company dedicated to saving food from being categorized as "waste" and rechanneling it to local underprivileged families. Refood acts as the final step of the supply chain for the food industry, allowing companies an environmentally-friendly way of removing their products when they get closer to expiration. With a BA degree in Journalism and International Studies from the University of Oregon, and an MBA from IESE (pronounced I-essay) University in Barcelona, Maryam has dedicated the last 6 years of her life utilizing her education and awareness to help solve one of Kuwait's most prominent environmental problems.
Omar Kammourieh
Conservation Activist
Omar Kammourieh is a student at Columbia University and has been leading Kuwait’s first experiment to space which is testing a strain of bacteria that can reduce Carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere.
Reem AlAwadhi
Assistant Professor - Earth and Environmental Sciences
She received her Ph.D. in environmental science and policy from the State University of New York, and Master’s in Environmental Science from Johns Hopkins University. Her research interests involve understanding the dynamics of environmental activism, the relationship between humans and their environment and climate change policies in Kuwait.
ريم عبدالرحمن العوضي أستاذة مساعدة في قسم علوم الأرض والبيئة بجامعة الكويت. حصلت على درجة الدكتوراه في علوم البيئية وسياساتها من جامعة ولاية نيويورك، وماجستير في العلوم البيئية من جامعة جونز هوبكنز. كما حصلت على شهادة الدراسة المتقدمة في مشاريع التنمية المستدامة من جامعة سيراكيوز. إنها شغوفة بالقضايا البيئية في دول وتأمل في غرس هذا الشغف في طلابها. وهي عضو في الرابطة الوطنية لمتخصصي البيئة.
تشمل بحوثها العلمية على المواطنة البيئية، وإدارة الحملات البيئية، وقضايا الحراك البيئي في الكويت. عملت أيضًا على سياسات تغير المناخ واحتجاز الكربون وتخزينه أثناء عملها في الولايات المتحدة.
