Edward Snowden once said that “Every person remembers some moment in their life where they witnessed some injustice, big or small, and looked away because the consequences of intervening seemed too intimidating. But there's a limit to the amount of incivility and inequality and inhumanity that each individual can tolerate. I crossed that line. And I'm no longer alone.”
For those of us who live well, it may be difficult to appreciate the true meaning of the word "inequality" and the heavy social phenomenon behind it. Inequality permeates every aspect of life, from gender to race, from region to country. All the labeled objects in the world are not equal, and at the same time, unequal objects cannot accept equal allocation of resources.
To take the simplest example, when applying for a job, women are often asked about their choice between family and work, while men are rarely asked this question. Sadly, most people see nothing wrong with this phenomenon, and even those who are aware of it do not react much to it.
But this is something we need to care about and work hard to solve. To some extent, every member of our community belongs to some dominant groups. Maybe we are favored in certain fields of work, maybe we have never suffered racial discrimination, or maybe we don’t need to worry about the cost of living. However, it also makes it all the more important that we understand what is "unfair" and fight to improve it.
