Annalisa Fang

Musician
Annalisa is a rising senior at Deerfield Academy from Hopkinton, Massachusetts. A musician since the age of five, her journey as a performer has led her to gain an understanding of flow and how it can help us perform better in our everyday lives. Outside of music, she enjoys spending time on journalism and projects in social innovation.

Daniel Kang

Linguist
Daniel is a member of Deerfield Academy’s class of 2021. He was born in Seoul, South Korea and moved to the US for high school. His interests are broad, ranging from math to Classics. He speaks Korean and English, has studied Mandarin, Latin, and Greek in school, and enjoys learning other languages in his free time. In college next year, he hopes to follow the lead of curiosity, studying math, languages, and other passions he may stumble upon.

Fahad Shabaz

Scholar
Fahad Shahbaz is from Pakistan. He is the President of the International Students Alliance at Deerfield Academy. During his free time, he likes to play soccer and guitar.

Jerry Zhou

Political Activist, Scholar, Influencer
A Junior at Deerfield Academy hailing from Los Angeles, California, Jerry Zhou is a self-professed “artist in the information age” – a post-post-post-modern poet and political satire writer for a multitude of school publications, both sanctioned and unsanctioned. In his more serious pursuits, Jerry is the founder and leader of Youth Global Action, an organization that works to educate and organize high schoolers around the world to make individual political change. (youthglobalaction.org) In both his art and his political work, Jerry explores societal and cultural trends–then breaks them down, criticizing the arbitrary and flawed conventions that shape global culture. Partisan culture, specifically, has caught his interest as of late – and in his talk, Jerry exposes the root causes of modern political disputes and proposes a potential solution in his (self-proclaimed) “charismatic and humorous manner”. Just… don’t take him too seriously.

Lily Zeng

Mental Health Activist
Originally from La Crosse, Wisconsin, Lily Zeng is a junior in high school. She has always been drawn to the inner world of thoughts and reflection, leading her to the fascinating world of psychology. While she loves considering the way environmental factors influence our current selves, she also strives to recognize the scientific basis of human behavior and the profound influence of the brain on personality. In this talk, she hopes to share a glimpse of her personal journey to better understand introversion through the lens of neuroscience as well as to consider the implications of understanding temperament on the larger scale of society.

Maddie Poole

Activist, Scholar
Madeline Poole lives in Western Massachusetts and will be graduating high school May of 2021. She will be attending college in the fall where she hopes to major in Global affairs and Psychology or Neuroscience. Madeline wants to continue learning the French language, delving deeper into international relations, and examining the different ways we interact across cultures. Communication is an integral human quality that is continuously fascinating, and she hopes her talk and personal experience enables people to re-think the ways in which their identities are a mosaic of their surroundings, and how the way they move through the world can speak more than words.

Yurok Song

Musician, Mathematician
Yurok Song is currently a Junior attending Deerfield Academy. Although born in Seoul, South Korea, he moved at the age of 8 to Phoenix, Arizona, where he still lives. Yurok is passionate about math and science, and is especially interested in physics. In addition to his interest in science, he also plays the cello, an instrument he has been playing for over 7 years.
