In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Caili Danieu

After a long battle with depression characterized by numerous psychiatric hospitalizations and suicide attempts, Caili Danieu is no stranger to suffering. But after surviving a particularly lethal suicide attempt, she realized that continuing to run from her emotional pain would only keep her stuck in it. In this talk given at TEDxSUNYGeneseo, Caili shares her story of rock bottom to provide a unique perspective on how diving into our darkness just may be the best way to overcome it.

David Hahn

Dr. David Hahn, an adjunct professor of Philosophy at SUNY Geneseo, and whose specialty is conspiracy theories and misinformation discusses the two pandemics: the biological virus and the social pandemic. The social pandemic is a systemic belief in conspiracy theories, pseudo-science, and alternative medical claims that was largely ignored until the damage was already done. The social pandemic has had the effect of dragging the disease on. Dr. Hahn, offers education as an immunization against the social aspect of the next pandemic.

Learning in school should look and feel much more like the process of learning to ride a bicycle. We have over a century of research on how people learn that is often not utilized in schools because we are focused on covering content and ensuring students acquire the knowledge they need to pass tests at the end of the school year just to forget the information afterwards. Instead, we should be focused on developing conceptual understanding to help students learn and remember important information. With information accessible at our fingertips and in our pockets, we no longer have the need to be hyper focused on knowledge acquisition. By focusing on conceptual understanding we can ensure students build the skills they need to compete in a global society when they leave our doors. The time is now to shift from knowledge acquisition to conceptual understanding.
