In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Digital Projects & Open Access Editor

I am the Digital Sustainability Working Group lead at CUP&A and over the last year and a half I have become more and more aware of the impact our digital habits have on the planet. After chairing the ALPSP Redux Sustainability panel in 2020 I realised we need to understand what this impact is and I started learning more about the subject. At the end of 2020 I started a project in the academic division of CUP&A to start calculating the digital carbon emissions of our digital publishing workflow and websites. Over the last year we have learnt where the majority of our emissions come from and how we can start creating more sustainable digital products for our researchers and learners.

Catie Sheret is the General Counsel and Company Secretary for Cambridge University Press & Assessment. Catie has worked as an in-house lawyer in education for most of her career, moving to the Press in May 2018. She is responsible for legal and business ethics & compliance, and leads a team of around 45 professionals supporting our global business. She is also the executive sponsor on sustainability and brand issues.

I am part of L&BA’s Green Team and have had a long interest in living an environmentally conscious and ethical life. I have recently become involved with The Chancery Lane Project (TCLP), which aims to bring climate conscious and net zero drafting into contracts across the world. I am a trained TCLP facilitator and will be hosting the first workshops at Cambridge in February 2022. I am also on the inaugural Environmental, Social and Governance committee for the Society for Computers and Law.

Brief biography that includes information about your connection to your talk’s topic (i.e. career at Cambridge, previous career/s before working at Cambridge, educational background) I am the systems and data analyst at the African branch. I have been with Cambridge for six years. Environmental awareness and a naïve but sincere desire to make the world a better place are anchoring themes in my life. For the past two years as Business Operations Lead in Cape Town, I have been working to embed ecological sustainability throughout the African business’ value chain. Academically, I am currently completing a Master’s degree focused on the quality of carbon disclosure and the risks of climate change on the South African economy.

Kit Sutton

Kit Sutton is Business Ethics & Compliance Manager for Cambridge Schools – appropriate given that she never stopped asking “why?” Kit’s career as a Professional Troublemaker began when she called the BBC and convinced them to give her a job. From there she spent several years in the glamorous world of waste management and environmental crime, before moving officially into anti-corruption at Oxford University Press. A passionate advocate for environmental and human sustainability, Kit has discussed modern slavery and human rights with industry leaders, challenged the electric vehicle industry to invest in recycling before mining, and volunteered at children and youth events to get them immersed in the natural world while we still can.

I’m Luong Tran. My parents were Chinese/Vietnamese refugees during the late 70’s, and we were lucky that the world was a much more welcoming place. I grew up in Cambridge, where my family still live, and during my A-level years had a part time job at Cambridge University. I completed a degree in Media Arts in London. I cut my teeth at Cambridge Training and Development before freelancing for Cambridge Assessment. The writing was on the wall that I’d end up at Cambridge University Press and Assessment as a Media Delivery Manager. I’ve been an outspoken advocate of a plant based diet and am probably known as the annoying vegan.

Just like start up or initiatives, chances are that you run into obstacles in meeting your goals or plans. The talk will be about one’s journey towards Going Green and it will never be an easy road.

Having seen the transformative power that a platform for the ‘unheard voice’ can provide, Vicky is passionate about climate justice and community empowerment as central approaches to any corporate sustainability approach. Now working to support CUP&A in developing its approach to carbon zero and sustainability in education, Vicky is an advocate for ensuring that our purpose – and the voice of our communities - underpins all that we do in trying to create a better future.
