Theme: Justice

You know the feeling of hot indignation, frustration, and maybe anger, when you are on the receiving end of an injustice.
Yet, until that moment, justice is a concept we blithely assume is a given.
Some of us fight for justice, for ourselves, and others. Some of us are unconscious contributors to another’s injustice.
But whatever our role, it’s essential to our society – and that’s why in 2023 we’ll examine Justice in its many forms.

Advocate for women affected by teh criminal justice system

Originally from Sydney, Juanita moved to Perth in 2023 searching for a fresh start and has since collaborated with The University of Western Australia’s Criminology lecturers, sharing her life experience with students. She is now a Peer Support Coordinator for Success Works, transforming the lives of women affected by the criminal justice system.

Karinda Burns

Wajarri Yamaji and Yued Noongar woman and Law Academic

Karinda is a First Nations law academic at The University of Western Australia. Born and raised on Noongar Boodja, Karinda is a Wajarri Yamaji and Yued Noongar woman. She holds a Bachelor of Laws and Master of Education from Deakin University. Her research focuses on Indigenous jurisprudence and the Australian legal curriculum.

Megan Krakouer

Director of the National Suicide Prevention and Trauma Recovery Project

Megan is a Menang Woman of the Noongar Nation. She is an activist, social justice advocate and law reformer. Megan is a Director of the National Suicide Prevention and Trauma Recovery Project, Chair (Wagyl Kaip) of the South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council and holds a Bachelor of Laws from Deakin University. Megan was the recipient of the Dr Yunupingu Award for Human Rights at the National Indigenous Human Rights Awards in 2018. Megan is Perth’s Citizen of the Year 2023 and a Finalist for the 2023 National NAIDOC Person Award.
