TEDxSTMU is an independently organized TED event hosted by Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University, where visionaries, innovators, and leaders from various disciplines converge to share their insights and ideas. Amber Rahim Shamsi

Journalist

Amber Rahim Shamsi is an award-winning multimedia journalist, political commentator, free speech advocate, and media development expert. She is currently Pakistan editor for a Dubai-based digital media start-up. Before that she was Director, Centre for Excellence in Journalism (CEJ) at the Institute of Business Administration (IBA), leading the successful launch of the UNDP-supported fact-checking platform iVerify Pakistan. She is also an International Visitor Leadership Programme (IVLP) and an International Centre for Excellence in Journalism (ICFJ) Digital fellow. Ms. Shamsi has participated thrice in the Jinnah Institute's India-Pakistan Track II Chaophraya Dialogue. She has hosted three news and current affairs shows on mainstream Pakistani news channels, and continues to appear on international and national television channels as a political analyst. She was a bilingual reporter for the BBC World Service, where her work largely focused on human rights.

Dr. Taimur Khan

Sarangi Player

Dr. Taimur Khan's musical journey began with the guitar in 1990, performing and composing in Rawalpindi and Islamabad until 1996. His fascination with string instruments led him to explore the rabab, sitar, and violin, before discovering the sarangi in 1996, inspired by Ustad Nazim Ali's recording. While studying medicine at The Aga Khan University in Karachi, Dr. Taimur began sarangi lessons in 1997 with Ustad Mubarik Ali. After his guru's passing in 2002, he continued his training with Ustad Mehfooz Khokhar and later with Ustad Allah Rakha, Pakistan's last senior sarangi maestro, until his death in 2015. Dr. Taimur has performed at Radio Pakistan, Lok Virsa, PNCA, Tehzeeb Foundation, APMC, and internationally in Norway. In 2022, he served as the Head of Music at the National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA), Karachi.

Dr. Zafar Mirza

Former Health Minister of Pakistan

Dr. Zafar Mirza is a renowned global health expert and a leading voice in healthcare policy and reform. He served as the Minister of Health, Pakistan from 2019 to 2020, where he spearheaded significant healthcare reforms and initiatives. With over 30 years of experience in public health, Dr. Mirza has worked with various international organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Bank, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He has expertise in health systems strengthening, disease prevention and control, and health policy development. Dr. Mirza has published numerous papers and articles on global health issues and has presented at various international conferences. He is a strong advocate for universal health coverage, healthcare equity, and the right to health.

Hina Rabbani Khar

Former Foreign Minister of Pakistan

Hina Rabbani Khar is a visionary Pakistani politician, diplomat, and global leader who has shattered glass ceilings and defied conventions throughout her illustrious career. As the first woman to hold the position of Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Minister of State for Finance and Economic Affairs, she played a pivotal role in shaping Pakistan's foreign policy, trade agenda, and economic development. With her sharp intellect, strategic thinking, and unwavering dedication, she has navigated complex geopolitical landscapes, fostered international partnerships, and championed the causes of women's empowerment, education, and social justice. A sought-after voice on the global stage, she has addressed the United Nations General Assembly, the World Economic Forum, and other prestigious platforms.

Parvez Abbasi

Founder Adventues, Former Director NIC Islamabad

arvez Abbasi, recipient of the Pride of Pakistan 2021 award, is a notable tech entrepreneur and a pivotal figure in Pakistan's startup ecosystem. As the founding Project Director of the National Incubation Center (NIC) Pakistan, he has led its expansion, generating over 50 billion rupees in revenue and creating 120,000 jobs. With over 40 years of experience, including roles at Mobilink (Jazz) and establishing MobileZone, he has significantly impacted the telecom industry. Parvez is also committed to social work and youth mentorship, founding Career Launchpad with a 100% job placement rate and AdVentures to support startups and bridge academia-industry gaps. His contributions extend to numerous non-profits and educational initiatives, fostering sustainable self-employment and dignified livelihoods.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi

Former Prime Minister of Pakistan

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi is a seasoned Pakistani politician, statesman, and global leader who has made a lasting impact throughout his distinguished career. As the former Prime Minister of Pakistan and Minister of Petroleum and Natural Resources, he played a crucial role in shaping Pakistan's energy policy, economic development, and foreign relations. With his vast experience, strategic vision, and unwavering commitment, he has navigated complex political landscapes, fostered international collaborations, and championed the causes of sustainable development, education, and social welfare.

Taimoor Shah

COO, Shifa International Hospitals

Mr. Taimoor Shah has more than 17 years of experience working with hospitals, academic medical centers, technology organizations, universities, and development organizations in various parts of the world, including Pakistan, the Middle East, and Australia. He is currently working as Chief Operating Officer of Shifa International Hospitals - a group of hospitals with flagship hospital with more than 600 bedded multispecialty JCI accredited hospital. Previously, he worked as Executive Director of eShifa - South Asia's first JCI accredited and one of the largest home health organizations.
