Commandant Dr.N.Somasundaram

Commandant - Indian Coast Guard

I am a serving Indian Coast Guard Officer in the rank of Commandant. I joined the Indian Coast Guard in January 1992 and have completed 32 years of service as on 31 Dec 2023. During my career spanning 32 years, I have commanded two ICG ships viz., ICGS Gangadevi and ICGS Priyadarshini, and four ICG shore establishments viz., Port Blair, Pondicherry (twice), and Karaikal. The Director General Indian Coast Guard’s Commendation twice bestowed upon me is a testimony to my much-acclaimed achievements. The first one was awarded in the year 2003 for coordinating and organizing the President’s Colors Awarding Ceremony to the Indian Coast Guard, which is a pinnacle of recognition for any armed forces, and the second commendation was for saving my ship as the Commanding Officer of ICGS Gangadevi during the Tsunami. Though I am a dyed-in-wool sailor, I am also academically inclined and in possession of two Post Graduate degrees; English and Human Resources Management, two PG diplomas and a PhD
