Why you should listen
Dr. D-L Stewart (pronouns they/them, he/him) has informed and challenged what is known about minoritized college students, historically and currently through his focus on issues of race and ethnicity, sexuality and gender as well as religion, faith and spirituality; and in his research, teaching and service to professional organizations and institutions across the nation. As a public scholar, Stewart has galvanized conversations about diversity, inclusion, equity and justice in higher education. He teaches as a professor in the School of Education, serves as Co-Coordinator of Student Affairs in Higher Education, co-directs CSU Initiatives for the Race and Intersectional Studies in Educational Equity (RISE) Center and is affiliated with the Women’s Gender Research Center at Colorado State University.Stewart has published extensively (including under his former name) in the field across academic, practitioner, and public scholarship platforms. His peer reviewed scholarship has appeared in such journals as American Educational Research Journal, Journal of Higher Education, Review of Higher Education, Journal of College Student Development, Journal of Diversity in Higher Education and International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education, among others -- as well as numerous book chapters and invited articles. He has also edited or authored four books covering multicultural student services; gender and sexual diversity of U.S. college students; the historical experiences of Black collegians in northern liberal arts colleges in the mid-twentieth century; and rethinking student development theory through critical perspectives. Stewart’s public scholarship has appeared several times in Inside Higher Ed and he is a member of the Scholars Strategy Network and the National Center for Institutional Diversity. D-L is a graduate of Kalamazoo College (BA) and The Ohio State University (MA, PhD).
